PE

Intent

Why is PE important at Kilsby?

At Kilsby, we focus on developing the whole child, and support the children to ‘live life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10).

PE has been proven to have a positive impact on children, both physically and mentally. Children who are physically active have a greater opportunity to develop a stamina for learning across all subjects.

Our vision is to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE in all young people. We aim to ensure a positive and healthy physical and mental outlook in the future and help young people develop essential skills, such as leadership and teamwork. This links with our Christian core values of achievement, equality, respect and cooperation.

Implementation

When is PE taught?

PE is taught over two, one hour sessions each week shared between class teachers and a sports coach.

How is PE taught?

Teachers use a unique platform called Real PE, this is a flexible and progressive programme which aims to develop core skills such as balance and agility. These skills are then developed further with the sports coach who  transfers the skills taught through various sports games and activities. EYFS are taught two Real PE lessons each week to begin supporting the basic skills needed such as throwing and catching as well as building core strengths.

Kilsby is part of the Northamptonshire Sports Partnership who offer a variety of extra curricular opportunities which encourage and engage children of all abilities. This offers further opportunity to use the skills taught in school through competitive competition as well as non-competitive opportunities for those children who have limited experience or exposure through to develop and engage activities.

Extra curricular activities are offered throughout the school year by school staff and the sports coach, these activities are open to children of all abilities and allow further opportunity to nurture the lifelong love of sport in an exciting and engaging way. Children are encouraged to participate in inter-school events and intra-school events in a friendly and inclusive way.

What do we learn in PE?

In PE, skills taught through Real PE link to: social, personal, cognitive, creative, health and fitness and physical activities. Sports include but are not limited to: football, rugby, athletics, gymnastics, swimming, tri golf, tennis, dance.

How do we assess and monitor PE?

PE is assessed formatively through dialogue and conversation with the children during lessons. Children are given the opportunity to self evaluate and improve their skills linked to their personal ability throughout their lessons. At Kilsby, we want to promote the whole child and value their thoughts and responses to the subject, therefore we should ask open ended and  effective questioning techniques.
